Life coverage

Critical illness insurance.

A single payment if you are diagnosed with a covered condition, so that a serious illness does not become a financial one as well.

What it covers

The parts worth getting right.

  • A tax free lump sum once the survival period in the contract has passed
  • Cancer, heart attack and stroke on every policy, with far broader lists available
  • Yours to spend on anything: the mortgage, time off work, care that OHIP does not fund
  • Written on its own or added to a life policy

Commonly missed

This is not disability insurance. Disability replaces your income month by month while you cannot work. Critical illness pays once, on diagnosis, whether you return to work or not.

Worth knowing

OHIP pays for the treatment. It does not pay the mortgage while you are having it.

Common questions

Asked most about this.

What counts as a critical illness?

Every Canadian contract covers cancer, heart attack and stroke. Broader ones run to twenty five conditions or more. The definitions matter more than the count, and we go through them with you before you sign anything.

When does it pay out?

On diagnosis of a covered condition, once the survival period written into the contract has passed. Thirty days is common. It is one payment, not a monthly benefit.
